Fostering Expectations

Thank You for Considering Fostering

Fosters are the front line in saving dogs’ lives. By opening your home, you provide care, love, and a first chance at life as a family pet. Every foster makes it possible to save one more life and that impact is immeasurable.

For logistical reasons, all fosters must reside in Tennessee

Why Foster?

Tennessee Dachshund Rescue is 100% foster-based, and we can only save dogs with the help of our incredible foster families. Foster care is essential to our mission—the more homes we have, the more lives we can save. Fostering is a deeply rewarding experience, full of joy, and sometimes tears, when a dog finds their forever home. But knowing you’ve saved a life (and made room to save another) makes it all worthwhile.

How Long Can I Expect to Foster a Pet?

The amount of time a dog will spend in a foster home can vary wildly from just a few days to several months. Some dogs such as seniors, bonded pairs, or those with medical needs, may take longer to get adopted. Fosters who are open to longer stays are an invaluable asset to TDR and make a life changing difference for dogs who simply need more time to find their forever family. When getting a new foster we can discuss what adoption timeline you're most suited for.

What are the Responsibilities of a Foster Family?
  • Provide a safe, clean, and caring environment for the dog.
  • Provide food, water, exercise and socialization as appropriate.
  • Providing updates & photos of the dog to TDR.
  • Assist with transport to/from adoption events and veterinary appointments.
Do I get to pick my foster?

Fostering through TDR is not a trial run for adoption. We do not offer foster-to-adopt, and in most cases, fosters are not able to choose a specific dog. Dogs are placed based on the rescue’s needs and the foster’s general availability and experience. While we try to consider preferences like age range and gender, flexibility is key to helping us save the most lives

Of course, we understand that it’s easy to fall in love with your foster. Foster families may adopt their foster dog as long as the dog is not spoken for by another adopter.

More information
  •  Medical care, decisions, and costs are solely the responsibility of TDR
  • Foster care plays a critical role in understanding each dog’s behavior and temperament. Time in a foster home helps us assess skills such as leash walking, potty and crate training, and interactions with people, other animals, and children. Because of this, fosters must be understanding and willing to work through a variety of behaviors and challenges.
  • Perfection isn’t required—patience, love, and understanding are.
